Reiki For Healing

Reiki is an all-natural healing method. When a client is in the presence of a Reiki therapist, the therapist may or may not lay hands on the client, and Reiki can be sent to anyone, regardless of how far apart the therapist and client may be.

Two Japanese words comprise the name: Rei (pronounced “ray”), meaning Divine, cosmic, or Universal wisdom, and Ki (pronounced “key”), which is the energy of the life force in all of us (sometimes referred to as Chi, Prana, or Elan Vital, depending on the system of healing).

How Reiki Works

Touch is healing. Perhaps you’ve noticed the tendency in all animals to touch areas that hurt. Reiki is based on the ancient, Eastern belief that life energy flows through you, but, sometimes, the flow becomes blocked. When that happens, you experience a negative manifestation. You might get sick, feel stressed, or have negative thoughts and/or emotions. You might feel pain, discomfort, or not quite right. Reiki restores balance to the flow of your life energy, which then enhances your emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental well-being.  Please see my blog post entitled, Listen to Your Body.

A Reiki therapist will have received an attunement, or formal introduction, into Reiki, passed to her by a Reiki master. This allows the therapist to be able to use her life force energy in order to enhance the quality of clients’ lives as well as to improve clients’ health.

What a Session is Like

Often a Reiki therapist will have you sit up on a massage table initially, while she draws the Reiki symbols in her hands behind you. When that’s done, it’s likely the therapist will have you lie on your back on the massage table, while she places her hands either on you in various locations related to your chakras and/or places that need healing, or the therapist may hover her hands just above those places, so you will not feel your therapist touching you.

The atmosphere will likely be very calming and healing, with soothing colors, perhaps calming music, and possibly other objects in the environment intended to provide curative relaxation.

Small water fountains, crystals, aromatherapy, candles, and/or statues might all be a part of your Reiki experience.

Some therapists will follow a particular series of hand placements. The first positions are on your face and head. These are followed by positions on your neck, heart, solar plexus, lower abdomen, back, legs and feet. The practitioner will generally place her hands, and hold each position until she intuits that it’s time to move to the next. If she senses the need, however, some positions may be held longer than others. Also, she may return to a particular area if she senses it requires more Reiki.

Reiki is believed to flow to where it’s needed. While it will be helping in the area where the therapist’s hands are placed, it will also help in other areas where you, as a client, need it. In keeping with these beliefs, the therapist must be comfortable during the session in order to direct the energy properly. The Reiki therapist may remain seated for the session. She may use a pillow to ensure ease of positioning.

Sessions can last thirty to forty five minutes, although they may be longer or shorter if need be. When the session is complete, the therapist will likely give you a moment to rest and may ask you what you experienced. She’ll likely offer you a full glass of water and ask you to drink it completely. It’s always a good idea to drink extra water after a Reiki session to flush out toxins released into your system. Reiki is all about the flow of your life energy, and water conducts energy.

More About Reiki

A Reiki treatment is perfect for when you’re experiencing a particular problem or simply as a preventative or maintenance measure. Reiki can be done on anyone or anything. It can be used for the past, present or for the future. Some therapists may combine Reiki with other healing modalities such as hypnotherapy, crystal healing, aromatherapy, and/or energy healing, for example.

The atmosphere will likely be very calming and healing, with soothing colors, perhaps calming music, and possibly other objects in the environment intended to provide curative relaxation.

As with other healing modalities, what you experience may vary from what others do. Some clients say they don’t feel it in their body, while others feel a vibration or warmth. Some believe their subsequent healing is merely a coincidence. Fortunately, your belief is not required for Reiki to work. Reiki may help open your body’s energy centers or chakras, providing you the ability to become a conduit of energy of the Universe.

If a therapist stops during the session and goes to wash her hands, don’t be concerned or offended. Since practitioners are so intuitive, they can pick up some of your negative energy, and they simply need to disconnect to dispose of it. Your therapist will return momentarily, and she may continue on another area.

Reiki is very respectful of your readiness to release any particular issue, and it will never force you to do anything or cause you any harm. If you require a longer time to completely release something, your therapist will sense that and give you that time.

Reiki cannot harm you, and it cannot be forced upon you. A Reiki therapist must ask permission before offering it to you.  When you make the appointment with a Reiki therapist, that constitutes said permission.  Reiki aids your body’s natural healing process by unblocking the flow of energy. Reiki enhances your mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well-being.
